"Principal for
the Day" Builds Lasting Relationships
The students and staff at 186th Street received a surprise treat last
semester from meeting their "Principal for the Day”, Jeff Anthony, the
Vice President of Iron Mountain's Film and Sound Division. Mr. Anthony
brought one of his team members, Guy Abrahams, who was a former USC
track star and Olympian, to meet the students and teachers. Mrs. Reed
was very excited because Guy was her classmate at USC. The 5th grade
boys and girls had a chance to attend an assembly with our guests. The
students sat on the edge of their seats listening to Mr. Anthony and Mr.
Abrahams talk about striving for excellence, being responsible citizens,
listening to their parents and teachers, and going for the gold in their
academics. Mr. Anthony shared fond memories of being an elementary
student. His mother, Marion Anthony, his sister-in-law, Frances
Anthony, and nephew, Ryan Anthony, are all valuable staff members at
186th Street School. Mr. Anthony and Mr. Abrahams are proud products of
the Los Angeles Unified School District. Jeff attended Gulf Avenue
Elementary, Wilmington Middle School, and Banning High School. Guy
attended Manual Arts High School.
After hearing the inspirational talks, the students were treated to a
video of Mr. Abrahams running in the 200-meter dash of the Montreal
Olympics in 1976. They had an opportunity to pass two of his Olympic
batons around the auditorium while he was speaking. He represented
Panama, the country where he was born, in Montreal (1976) and Sydney
(2000). The business executives had a chance to visit classrooms, talk
to students and teachers, and observe the students learning in the
classrooms and playing during the recess periods. They also had an
opportunity to walk the campus and hear about the wonderful programs
happening at our school. Mr. Anthony and Mr. Abrahams fell in love with
our school and decided to join our impressive network of partnerships.
As a result of our community leaders’ visit back to school, the students
will receive a backpack, compliments of Iron Mountain. Our school is
excited about the relationships we have built with Mr. Anthony and Mr.
Abrahams. We are looking forward to the time when they will return this
month to pass out the backpacks to the students.
