Dear Fellow Peacemakers,

We just returned from the National Peace Conference in Boston, MA, July 16-18, 2008 with the Peace Games organization at Lasell College. The Peace Games organization is in three LAUSD schools. We all earned peace awards at the 2nd Annual Frannie Awards for our dedication and commitment to teaching and empowering students to create their own peaceful villages in their schools and communities:
Thomas Bradley Environmental Science Magnet - For Creative Initiatives Designed to Improve School Climate
Norwood - For Leadership in Sustaining School-Community Partnerships
186th Street School - Exceptional Staff Commitment to Peace Games and Peacemaking

The Principals from Bradley and 186th Street (Dr. Genevieve Shepherd and Marcia Reed) attended the conference along with teachers from the three schools (John Hatch, Judy Ellis, Richard Rogers, and Paty Cervantes), Healthy Start Coordinators (Jane Tokubo and Sharon Dean). parents (Dana Hongpanich and Wanda Hardy), and the LA Regional Director (Alice Green).  We also had a team of volunteers from the USC Joint Educational Project (Monica Bennett, Kelsey Larsen, and Abhinay Jhaveri).  We shared workshops with the conference attendees, and I delivered the keynote address for the conference.  My speech was entitled "Peace Rocks!"  We had a fabulous time interacting and learning peace strategies from educators from Boston, New York, Chicago, Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Bogota, Columbia.  You can find out more information about the program at www.peacegames.org or www.teachpeace.net.  We represented our District well and made our schools proud.

Respectfully submitted,
Marcia Sidney-Reed
Principal
