186th Street School
Soaring Academically, Artistically, and Peacefully!!!

Our 4th annual Peace March, "Stepping Out for Peace," was held on Friday, January 16, 2009, and it was a fantastic success!  The day was a bright, beautiful, and lovely day filled with the magic of the excited students, caring teachers, supportive parents, wonderful community leaders, and fabulous law enforcement officers to highlight our theme of peace. This year the march was dedicated to the memory of Dr. King, the change coming to America with our new president, and the service each individual can give to increase the peace in our schools, our homes, and our community.  Mrs. Reed encouraged the students to do their part by "treating everyone the way they want to be treated, and if you can't say something nice, don't say it at all."  Tami Ross came back to serve as our Peace Ambassador for the Peace March and she, along with Senior Lead Officer Moevao, Carol Ogawa (Toyota GM), Reggie Thompson (Toyota Human Resources), and Officer Felts from our School Police Department encouraged the children to celebrate peace everyday.

The Peace March empowers the school community to take a stand as activists, advocates, and ambassadors for peace. The event was another fabulous kick-off for our Peace Games Community Service Learning Projects. We gave our students an active learning experience to compare and contrast our school neighborhood with the neighborhoods in which they live. Our hope is that this activity posed questions and ideas that will spark our children to commit to doing something different to ensure peace in their communities. The day was a wonderful expression of the school and community coming together to celebrate peace.
.

As the Dr. King speech, "I Have a Dream," echoed all around the playground to begin the celebration, the students assembled with new determination to make a difference in their community.  We were happy to welcome representatives from Toyota, the LAUSD School Police, LAPD Harbor Division, KLCS, Lomita Harbor Connection, Madres Activas, Parent Ambassadors, and White Dove Release.  The students had a wonderful time wearing their Peace Games T-shirts and peace necklaces, seeing 30 white doves released, waving their peace signs, signing their chants of peace, seeing the patrol officers escort our march, hearing Officer Moevao give shout outs for peace, admiring the handheld peace wands, and meeting Kimba, from the School Police K-9 unit.  We were so grateful to have an abundance of parental and community support.  When the doves were released by the Student Senate members, the doves circled the playground and gave the children a creative display of how to soar together for peace.  The song "Let There Be Peace on Earth" served as send off music for the doves' flight of peace, which touched everyone's heart.  We could not have written a better script!  Therefore, we will celebrate, remember, and cherish the memory of our special day, and continue to soar academically, artistically, and peacefully!!!

Respectfully submitted,
Marcia Sidney-Reed
