There are several important councils, organizations, and groups on which parents may serve which make decisions about school policy, budget, programs, etc. We welcome your participation.
Shared Decision Making Council This group will decide policy for the Supply budgets, Staff Development, School Calendar of Activities, Textbooks, Equipment, and Student Discipline. It is composed of parents and staff members. Meetings are held once a month.
School Site Council This council makes decisions regarding the development, monitoring, and modifying of the School Plan. It oversees the supplemental budgets and coordinates with the advisory committees. It is composed of parents and staff members. Meetings are held once a month.
Compensatory Education Advisory Committee This advisory committee oversees the school's instructional program and budget for Title 1 students. It makes recommendations to the School Site Committee. It is composed of parents and school staff. It meets monthly.
PHBAO Community Rep Volunteer to serve as 186th Street School's representative for the Predominately Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Other (PHBAO) Committee. Meetings held four times per year with other Local District representatives.
186th Street School PTA Join the PTA at our monthly Board meetings on the 2nd Friday of the month at 12 noon. Volunteer to serve on the PTA Board, provide support during our fundraising efforts and participate in many PTA activities. Leave a message at (310) 324-1153 for the President.
Library Volunteer Program Assist our librarian in the library by helping children select proper books to read, research materials, and complete assignments. Contact Mrs. Veronica Orozco, our librarian, for more information!
Madres Activas These "Active Mothers" can be seen around the school at various school events and have taken on special projects for our school (Principal's garden, emergency preparedness, and local welfare needs of families)
Maria's Helpers Join a group of specially trained helpers who assist with the supervision and classroom tutoring for our full day Kindergarten students. Contact Mrs. Bebe Frank at (310) 539-5375 or e-mail at twofrank@earthlink.net
Parent Amassadors A group of parents, guardians, and community members who will help promote the spirit of 186th Street School as "Champions of Learning" for others within our school community. Many serve on multiple committees and organizations for the benefit of our children.
Parent Center Volunteers
Peace Games Volunteer to assist with activities to promote peacemaking at our school; two hours per week during the school day or at special school evening evetns. Contact Tami Ross at (310) 324-2305 or email her at tami@peacegames.org. They meet every 4th Thursday of the month at 3:30 pm.
Rolling Reader Program Volunteer each week to "read a story" to selected classrooms. Contact Crystal Shirley, Title 1 Coordinator for more information (310) 324-1153
